SAGAS--SOUTH CAROLINA ASSOCIATION FOR GERMAN-AMERICAN STUDIES

WELCOME to our page, dedicated to the study of cultural contributions made by German-speaking settlers in South Carolina. If you or your family are of Austrian, German, or Swiss-German heritage and settled in South Carolina WE WANT TO KNOW ABOUT YOU. Tell us what contributions to South Carolina's culture you or your family made: whether in the arts, crafts, business, religion, music, politics, writing, farming, or another area--TELL US ABOUT IT. If you can document your heritage with your greatgrandmother's quilt or your own invention--send us a picture. We'll feature it on this page and add your family to our archive of South Carolina Americans of German-speaking heritage.

This page introduces Helene Riley, born in Vienna, Austria. A dedicated teacher of German language, literature, and culture at Clemson University, she is the author of more than a dozen scholarly books and numerous articles in professional journals. Helene Riley taught at Yale University for 10 years before coming to Clemson. She is also a musician (voice, piano) and artist (painting, ceramics, needlecraft), and the mother of four grown children.
